7months old Lab puppy has gone crazy!?

I have a 7month old labrador puppy who over the last 10 days has changed so much.
I think this is him hitting adolecence.
He was perfect before, and he is so clever, we have taught him to sit, stay, lay down, give paw, he enjoyed learning all of this as well.
But just recently, off the lead he now runs off to other dogs and will not respond to “come” like he used to.
Also, quite often, maybe once a day the hair along his spine stands up, and he puts his head down and sprints round in circles like a crazy dog!
He gets 2 walks a day, and mental stimulation (hidden treats, training etc) once a day.
We are doing everything by the book! But he has gotten out of control. His play with other dogs is now very boisterious, he jumps all over them..
I know he is a puppy and will get out of hand, but this seems a lot worse than any other lad I’ve ever had…

He is becoming an adolescent. Think of a typical middle school student….When they are in elementary school they still think their parents and teachers are their best friends. When they hit those middle school years, they’ll do anything not to listen to you anymore.

He is growing up and showing his true colors. No more off leash time since he isn’t responding. A 7 month of lab is too large of a dog to be out of control around other dogs. Labs are big puppies (mentally) until they are about 4ish years old. So you really need to step up and work with him consistently.

Two walks a day might not be enough. (unless they are long walks. My dogs walk 4 miles every day, rain/snow/shine). You may want to take up biking or running to burn more energy off. A tired dog is a good dog As far as mental stimulation goes, that all depends on what you are doing. Hiding treats is fine, but boring after awhile. He needs to interact with you daily.

You didn’t mention what type of training you are doing. What he really needs is actual obedience training from an AKC obedience training club. You will work with experienced dog handlers who will be able to teach and guide you to a better relationship with your dog. Also, have you considered agility, tracking, dock jumping, or any other type of activity these dogs thrive in?

Some dogs are more intense and work driven then others, even in the same breed. Labs out of actual hunting stock lines tend to be more dominant, hyper, and “nutty” then labs out of show or pet lines (BYB). These dogs were bred to WORK for hours outside training and hunting, so their needs of exersize and mental stimulation are much greater then those of an average pet. It just all depends on the personality of the dog.

You need to do more for your dog. He is telling you this by being out of control. What you have done in the past for other dogs (or labs) worked for this individuals, but this is a different dog. The qualities you are describing (and yes, they ar qualities!) are what detection dog trainers look for in a highly work-driven dog. This is a sign that this dog is SMART, incredibly SMART, and the life of a pet is causing him such boredom he is going to make the best of it.

When I was looking for a border collie, I was wanting an insane, nutty, high drive, intense working dog to excell in agility, obedience, rally, herding, frisbee and any other training I could throw at her. What I found was my dream dog that had been rehomed 4 times in “pet homes”. Dogs such my border, and your lab, don’t do well as pets. They need so much more. They need a dog savy owner who will train and compete them to bring out their best qualities.

Find an AKC training club (no petsmart or private trainers) and get involved in the fun world of dog training and competition!
