The idea of obedience training is to merely teach the dog what not to do, and what it should do. The desired behaviors that are fundamental for your dog to learn and react to are basic commands, such as sitting when directed, coming when called, heeling when walking, and staying when told to.
Obedience training will establish the social hierarchy that dogs as pack animals demand. As your dog obeys your commands, such as sit or stay, he is being submissive and complying. This is not dissimilar to the kind of behavior a submissive dog in a wild pack would show towards the alpha dog.
The question is always asked whether it is more difficult to train puppies or mature dogs. There is no question that both older dogs and puppies can be trained successfully to be well-mannered and willing companions. It is normally easier to train puppies and young dogs than it is to retrain dogs that have developed behavior problems.
With poodle puppy training however, it is important to remember that puppies generally have a shorter attention span than to do full grown dogs. It is important, therefore to keep training sessions short in the beginning. You must also have lots of playtime for your puppy with other dogs, people or other animals. To develop a good, cheerful and safe dog, it is very important to ensure your puppy is properly socialized.
