Obedience training will establish the social hierarchy that dogs as pack animals demand. As your dog obeys your commands, such as sit or stay, he is being submissive and complying. This is not dissimilar to the kind of behavior a submissive dog in a wild pack would show towards the alpha dog.
The question is always asked whether it is more difficult to train puppies or mature dogs. There is no question that both older dogs and puppies can be trained successfully to be well-mannered and willing companions. It is normally easier to train puppies and young dogs than it is to retrain dogs that have developed behavior problems.
