Dog Potty Training Advice

dog potty training advice
Do I have any hope for this dog and potty-training??

We got a female English Setter dog that is 1 year old for free from a farmer. She lived outside her whole life in a caged pen with other larger dogs and no real people interaction. Obviously she is not potty trained. We have worked with her and she did really well the first week now she has started peeing in her crate. My husband is a bird hunter and hoped she would be a good bird dog, turns out she is “gun shy”. She is also very skittish around most noises and activities. She absolutely LOVES human interaction and cuddeling up with the kids or being petted. Is there any hope for her with potty training? I have 2 other dogs and not sure i can handle one that has this problem. By the way her name is Sami and we are animal lovers not sure what to do with this one. Any advice?? For the potty training and gun shyness??

For potty training:
Keep her on a leash all the time for a little while. That way you can contain messes and catch her in the act for quick correction. Take her out after meals, naps, and anytime she has been alone.
Also, get her on a strict schedule of eating and bathrooming.
When you take her out to potty, still on the leash, say over and over “go potty” until she does, then praise like crazy and go back into the house. No playing, she has to learn the difference between potty time and play time. Eventually she will go on command and you won’t have to guess when she has to go or wait forever for her to finish.

For gun training:
She needs to be desensitized to the sound. Have hubby record the sounds of the gun and play them at random times every day. Make a game of it, because if your kids or anyone startles and freaks out, she will too and may never train. Start with the volume low and gradually raise it. Praise bravery and ignore fear. Have the kids bang pots and pans. Blare ‘rock and roll’ at odd times for a few seconds every day.
You want more noise and chaos, not less. That way she will learn that loud noises aren’t scary and will respond to gun training.
Good luck.
