Luckily, training your new puppy needn’t be that difficult. They’re incredibly intelligent animals and can learn new things very quickly, and if you train them properly you’ll soon be left with a pup that’s perfectly well-behaved. The challenge is more about when to begin and how.
Traditional advice tells you to start young. Start your Jack Russell puppy training from as soon as you bring them home if you want to have the most effect, because if they’re given the chance to learn bad behaviour it will be much harder to change that habit later. Set a consistent and firm tone early on, discouraging any misbehaving, and showing him who is the dominate force of the house. You are the master.

Be Consistent And Quick To Praise

Mixed messages, such as playing rough with him one minute and then chastising him the next, will confuse your dog and paralyse his process. Decide what’s acceptable and stick to it, and even if you’re finding his faux aggressiveness amusing, don’t encourage it.
This is also when positive reinforcement enters the process. Offer lots and lots of praise anytime your dog does something well and simply ignore your dog if he does something bad; this will encourage your dog to only do good things in order to win praise. Even punishment is seen as attention, so only ever give him that attention when he deserves it (unless of course it’s severe misbehaving, in which case a firm “no” should do it.

The same principles apply for toilet training also. Praise him when he goes to the toilet outside but don’t reprimand him if he makes a puddle indoors (unless you catch him in the act, in which case take him outside immediately to show where he’s supposed to go), and if you show him what’s right he’ll soon get the hang of things.
Training Takes Patient
Despite their keen intelligence, Jack Russells need a bit of time to fully absorb this training. While you can’t rush this process, if you keep consistent and reinforce his good behavior, you’ll achieve results as quickly as is possible. Even if you’re patient, your Jack may not be as they bore fairly easily, so keep your sessions short and shower him with lots of love.
