So you want to have your own cute and cuddly Shih Tzu, but that shouldn’t mean you need to raise from as puppies. No one doubts how cute this breed can be – maybe you’ve spent some time combing a friend’s Shih Tzu and simply adored the dog – but ask yourself if you’re ready, financially and emotionally to take care of such a demanding breed.
Your house, for starters, must be rearranged a bit to accomodate Shih Tzu puppies. A section of your house, or maybe use a large crate, must be where these puppies can relieve themselves – because they’re yet to be house-trained, they will relieve themselves whenever nature calls. One reason potty-training a Shih Tzu pup is hard is because this breed doesn’t do well with being punished; punish it and it may shut down, become confused and do the reverse of what you want it to avoid doing. You need to build a home and schedule that will encourage a Shih Tzu to poop and pee as scheduled and where designated. If you’re raising several pups at once, that’s even more of a challenge. Here’s something not everyone has the patience for, or that one’s busy schedule may not allow – you need to groom your Shih Tzu everyday, if not some health problems may ensue.
If you didn’t know, there are benefits to choosing adult dogs to puppies – in case you may be unsure if a puppy is what you want. Adult dogs, as a rule of thumb, are house-trained – so no more sleepless nights and potty accidents you have to clean up. An adult pup will also have been observed by the animal shelter staff, and you can be briefed about a dogs’ set of problem behavior or possible health problems.
You will also be helping the shelter, and indirectly other orphaned dogs, by adopting an adult dog – that’s because the shelter will be able to take in other abandoned dogs. But if you’re into a specific breed, it’s possible still to find that in a shelter.
Since most shelters and rescues take in as many abandoned dogs as they can, you might not be able to find the specific breed you’re looking for. You’re better off with looking for Shih Tzu breeders, the good ones of course, since they are in the know about specific breeds. If you are planning, for example, to enter your Shih Tzu in a dog show, then you want your dog to pass the conformation – something you may not be able to do with a pup adopted from a shelter. But then, you never really know if you’re going to get lucky – there are many shelters. If money may become an issue, consider that adopting is practically free compared to buying from a breeder.
You need to have a level head when looking for Shih Tzu puppies for sale, otherwise, you might end up impulse buying a litter, out of their super-cuteness, never mind if you bought from a puppy mill and if you’re not prepared to take care of the pups. Are you sure your home situation (living alone, with family, with kids?), your finances (are you well off?), and your work-schedule (who will take care of your puppies when you’re away on full-time work?) can accomodate the needs of these pups.
