Productive Puppy House Training

If you want to keep your house clean after deciding to adopt a new puppy, you need to insist on puppy house training rules. Each new puppy and its owner needs to work through house training. All puppies are different, some pick up things rather fast and some don’t. Try not to get flustered when you are going through the first trials of puppy training. Keep being consistent, loving, and patient and your puppy will learn what you want.

Looking Into the Mind of Your Puppy

Knowing how your puppy’s mind works can help a lot in effective puppy house training. The word clean holds a different meaning for your puppy than it holds for you. You think it is important for your puppy to go to a chosen spot in the garden and “go”, but to your pup, what’s important is to relieve himself where the notion takes him. Using the bathroom away from their food and bed, the basic health and safety rule of nature, is your puppy’s only concern. This means that any place else in your house, away from his bed and food, may be considered appropriate, from behind your couch to the floor in your bedroom. You must teach your dog that places that may be acceptable to him are not necessarily acceptable to you, you must lead him to the spot that you have chosen for him.

Reading the Signs

During the first couple of weeks of a puppy, the early warning signals aren’t always easy to read, so you need to find a way to understand this as soon as possible. Choose a location soon that is close to the puppy’s food, bed, or play area. You will find it rewarding to predict when it’s time to take your puppy to go out. Generally, puppies are required to go as soon as they wake up, after drinking or eating, when they are excited, after playing, or at least once every waking hour!

You must familiarize yourself with your puppy’s body language and learn to see the indicators that tell you it’s time for him to “go”. When a puppy is persistently sniffing, circling a single spot or has his tail held high, those are common signals. When this happens, all you have to do is get your pup and bring him or her to the appointed toilet area.  By doing so, you are well on your way to completing your puppy house training.

Seeing family members and visitors, or being excited in general, can still make dogs, even those that have had dog training, have small accidents. This type of response is natural and is called submissive urination.  You shouldn’t treat this differently from regular house training. You should never go as far as punishing you dog, even if other accidents occur. They will only be confused by punishment, and become secretive about going to the bathroom.

Do not yell at your dog, instead work things out until this habit is broken this when accidents like this happen during periods of high excitement. Keep greetings low key and preferably do them while you’re both still outside. Build up your dog’s confidence and greet them gently. Don’t make a big deal out of an accident when it occurs. The next thing you know, your dog won’t be having these types of accidents and you will be celebrating for having finished puppy house training successfully.
