How To Stop Your Dog Jumping

Is your dog a well behaved dog that sits down when people walk in or does your dog jump up on your guests bowling them over? This can be very cute for a puppy but if you have 75lb energetic dog this can be a disaster. You can quite easily train your dog to be well mannered and polite when greeting your guests.
Firstly we will find out why dogs jump. Probably the main reason for a dog to jump is to get at a persons face, this is natural behavior for a dog. If you observe dogs greeting each other they will lick each others muzzles. This is quite acceptable behavior in the dog world and is considered good manners but with humans it can be deemed quite rude.
In order to stop these bad manners people do exactly what their dog would consider play initiation in the canine world. People tend to push around the neck and shoulders of their dog with the hands to get the dog down. Watch what happens with dogs when playing. They put their front paws on the neck and shoulders of the other dog and hold them there.
When our dog doesn’t understand that we want the dog to stop we keeping pushing the dog down and the dog keeps jumping up. A person then tends to get annoyed and shouts at the dog and that confuses the dog. The dog thought that you were playing with him or her and then you turned and got angry and aggresive at the dog and confused it.
So how can you fix this problem of your dog jumping up on yourself and visitors? The first thing is just try to ignore this behavior. By ignoring the behavior you are sending a very clear message to the dog in canine language. Walk up towards the dog and keep going through the dog, totally ignore your dog like the dogs not there. An alternative method that is highly effective is to just turn your back to the dog and ignore the dog. When you just totally ignore your dog you send the message that you don’t like this behavior. As soon as the dog calms down and is back on all four paws give the dog a quite pat and maybe a treat. Don’t get all excited and then praise the dog excitedly as this will only excite your dog and start the dog jumping all over again. When you arrive home don’t make a fuss about the dog. Just be calm when you get in and calmly greet your dog.
