Start Training Your Mastiff Puppy With These Three Principles
A very big part of any Mastiff puppy's early life is play. Did you know that playtime can also be a time for teaching your new pup? Play can be a valuable tool in training your Mastiff puppy everything from learning simple commands to teaching them the ins and outs of socializing and what it takes to be a well behaved dog.
There are three very basic things a Mastiff puppy should learn from an early age. The first thing to teach your puppy is the basic command "no" which will become the most useful.Since you will be telling your new pet "no" throughout your relationship with him you must start teaching him this command from the beginning.
It is easy. Dogs, even when they are young puppies, can recognize voice tones. In the future you will not have to be so forceful in your commands once they learn to associate your displeased tone with the word "No.". You must first get his undivided attention. If your Mastiff puppy misbehaves all you need to do is to pick him up, make sure you have eye contact, and say "No" with a firm voice.Your puppy will react immediately. Your puppy may drop his head shepishly, growl, or try to play his way out of it, depeding on his personality. If your dog growls or tries to play his way out of it you will need to keep repeating the command just so he knows you mean business.
Then, simply let it go. Go ahead and put the puppy down and then keep a watch on how he responds to you. Your puppy may be rebellious and test you by continuing to repeat his misbehavior therefore, you also must continue to repeat the process. Your puppy will get the message as you are firm, but gentle, and consistent.
As for the other things that your baby needs to know, you will probably default to teaching him the proper way to go potty. This is actually easier than you might think, as pups are a lot smarter than they look. Timing is, however, everything. If you notice that your puppy has had an accident on the floor but is somewhere else playing because you didn't notice it right away, then all you can do is clean it up and try to pay closer attention to your puppy next time. You do not want to rub his nose in it because he won't understand and he will only be hurt and confused. What you want to do is catch him in the act. Anytime you see him getting ready to tinkle, quickly pick him up and take him outside. But he will probably be so shocked that he will save some for the yard, where you can praise him when he goes.
The third thing that your Mastiff pup needs to know is that he should never put his teeth on a human being. "play biting" is a lot of fun with a new puppy os it might be hard not to play that way but you must not do it. But you don't want them to play so rough when they are older. When playing with your Mastiff use toys that are safe for your puppy to bite into. Puppies like to bite, so put a toy he can bite in his mouth if he tries to bite you when you pet him and be sure to firmly tell him no. If he keeps trying, you should pick him up and tell him no. If you are consistent, you should get good results.
When your pup has accomplished learning her first command, or goes outside instead of on the floor and stops puppy-biting, she is well on her way to graduating from a Mastiff puppy to a well-mannered adult.
