About The English Bulldog Breed
Bulldogs tend to look “tough” but in reality, most of them are just big sweethearts. Bulldogs are the appropriate pets for families having children because they are gentle and protective dogs which bond especially with young people. In fact, despite their typically laid-back nature, these dogs are bred to be brave enough to bait bulls, so you know they’re not short on courage! They’re sensitive to their owner’s moods and in fact are often considered clowns! . They will go well with the daily walking and some brushing.
The history of the English bulldog begins, of course, in England. The term “bulldog” was first used sometime around 1568 and applied to the modern bulldog’s ancestors. It was a crossbreed between the pug and the mastiff dogs.
Fighting With The Bulls
Bulldogs were initially bred to fight with bulls, bears or other animals. The fight between animals was considered a sport, and was a popular one. A bull was then lashed to a post, and a bulldog would leap at the bull, latch onto its snout, and attempt to suffocate the bull. However, the breed was also used for other purposes as well: for instance, in the mid 17-century in New York City, bulldogs were used in a city-wide effort to round up wild bulls. The dogs did what they were trained, to seize the bull by its snout, but not to suffocate it, just hold it until tied. Because they were crossbred with pugs, the modern bulldogs have shorter bodies and they are no more able to fight a bull through gripping its snout. Today, many schools and teams all over the United States and the United Kingdom use a bulldog as their mascots due to their fierce look and exciting history.
The bulldog males should have a standard weight of around 50 pounds, and females 40 pounds in the United States, but in other countries, like the United Kingdom, a male can weight up to 70 pounds.
English bulldogs have health problems genetically related to their breed, as many other dog breeds have. The breathing issues are usually encontered at this breed due to their bulk and the shortness of their muzzle. The famous loudly snoring accompanies these issues. Many bulldogs develop cysts between their toes. They need regular cleansing of the folds on their face to avoid infections and, in the case of the “cherry eye”, the protrusion of the inner eyelid must be corrected by a veterinarian. Again because of their weight and the way their bodies are proportioned, bulldogs tend to be bowlegged in their hind legs. This can cause a rash of hip problems including hip dysplasia. They also develop heat related problems . In the hot periods or exposed much time to the sun they can get really sick.
If you are planning to breed bulldogs, you should also know that most bulldog puppies are not delivered vaginally because their large heads often get stuck in a mother’s birth canal. They are not delivered vaginally but through a Caesarian section.
If you are interested in showing an English bulldog these are some general features. Their smooth, short coats have a variety of colors. In order of desirability their colors are brindle – more specifically red brindle – red, white, and fawn (fawn-colored bulldogs tend to have markings of other color as well. ) A dog is disqualified if their nose if pale or liver-colored and judges typically frown on black-coated bulldogs as well. Most bulldogs have naturally short tails and do not require docking.
English bulldogs are wonderful dogs to have. They are also suitable for families due to their sweet, gentle natures.
