Puppy Exercise Guidelines
Exercising a 5 month Black and Tan Coonhound?
My husband and I adopted a Black and Tan Coonhound from our local shelter. Needless to say, the little guy has a TON of energy and is always on the go.
He is crated for a couple hours in the morning and a few in the afternoon (about 6 hours total Mon – Fri) and in the evenings, he’s ready and raring to go! My husband is a runner and would like to take the little guy out with him on a run (couple miles tops). Thus, how much is too much? I know you should let the puppy dictate how much energy he needs to exert, but I’m also concerned about his bones and muscles not being fully developed and given the breeds disposition re: hip dysplasia…I don’t want to over do it.
Do anyone have a guideline or suggestions?
Thanks very much,
5 months is too young to be running at a regular pace for any length of time (so, ‘couple miles’ is too much). You can exercise him by playing with him, allowing him to play with other puppies/dogs, walking, and obedience work. He should be at least a year (preferably older) before you start to jog with him any distance.
