Teacup Shih Tzu
A teacup shih tzu is a small breed of dogs. They are considered under the category of toy dogs. This breed is raised through selecting the smaller of Shih Tzu dogs by the breeders of these already small sized dogs. Basically, the teacup Shih Tzu is basically the same as any other Shih Tzu. An adult teacup Shih Tzu can grow the same size of a regular one. The breeders of teacup Shih Tzu just pick the smallest of each litter and pair it with the smaller Shih Tzu from another litter in their attempt to rise smaller than average dogs.
Many people who belong to renowned kennel associations discourage the discriminate breeding of teacup Shih Tzus. This is because all the breeders of Shih Tzu should give the same attention to the health and other features of the breed. Some special health problems may occur in these very small dogs, and not all breeders are able to face them. Others might overlook recessive genes traits that may contribute to strain of dogs that are prone to sickness and other condition just for the sake of breeding smaller dogs. These are the reasons why most of the kennel clubs do not have different standards for teacup Shih Tzu.
Main Characteristics of the Teacup Dogs of this Breed
Basically, the teacup shih tzu should have the same characteristics as any other Shih Tzu. Don’t let the breeder to fool you, if a Shih Tzu is smaller when puppy, it does not necessary mean it will keep a smaller size when adult.
Regularly, the Shih Tzu dogs won’t pass over ten inches high at their withers. In order to raise teacup Shih Tzu, a good breeder needs specific methods but also puppies with specific genes. You must also know that teacup Shih Tzu should be less than seven inches at the withers, as this is the minimum height considered regular by most of the kennel associations. Most of the teacup Shih Tzu breeders sell their dogs when they are puppies, because there is the risk that these dogs to grow as adults to the normal average size of the breed.
Their average weight is bellow sixteen pounds. A teacup Shih Tzu dog may be a little lighter. The differences are obvious when they are puppies, but most adult dogs are quite similar.
Physical features of the Shih Tzu are the same whatever its size or weight. Their ears are hanging and covered by long hair. Their long coats need to be brushed every day, to prevent snarls and tangles that may turn into matted hair. Some of the Shih Tzu owners use to cut their hair short for better maintenance while most owners retain their long hair for show purposes. The other hair characteristics of these dogs are similar to the regular ones. They have flowing tails that curl on their back.
Temperament
The teacup Shih Tzu has quite similar temperament to the normal sized dogs. They have been specifically bred to accompany Chinese royalty. They are called lapdogs because they are small enough to fit on your laps. These dogs are even tempered and playful. Although they are friendly dogs, they can be fierce with danger and protective with their master. A small house or apartment is enough for the teacup Shih Tzu to live in. In spite of this, they do need to be walked daily.
