As the name suggests, goldendoodles are a mix between golden retrievers and poodles. You might hear of a goldendoodle called a Golden Poo, a Groodle, or even a Dood. The name typically varies based upon the breeding and the owner. Whatever you choose to call them, you will find these high-end “boutique” dogs to be wonderful family pets for many of the reasons listed above.
Bred in North America since the mid-1990s’, these dogs are first generation hybrids. Because of this first generation breeding, the dogs exhibit “hybrid vigour”. In animal breeding, this refers to the fact that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is much healthier and grows better than either of its parents’ lineages did. This hybrid breeding makes for wonderful family dogs that are smart, friendly, loving and easy to train. These are all excellent qualities for a family dog that will reside in the home.
Since goldendoodles are hybrid breeds, it is important to note that their appearance can vary greatly depending upon the size and appearance of their parents, as well as other genetic factors.
Their physical appearance can vary from shaggy and more like the retriever side of their breeding, to more of a loosely-curled poodle. Most goldendoodles fall somewhere in the middle, with the length of their coat varying from about four to eight inches. The color of the coat might be cream, gold, apricot, brown, or gray.
But the beauty of this animal is its low to non-existent shedding quality! If you’ve had dogs before and just cannot tolerate the constant shedding, a goldendoodle might just be for you!
Since there is no guarantee of how these dogs will look once they are full grown, it is important to visit with the puppies, their parents, and the chosen breeder if you are considering purchasing one of the goldendoodle puppies for sale. Choosing a quality, loving breeder is essential, and viewing the parents will help you gauge the dog’s ultimate size and temperament.
The bottom line is that goldendoodles make great pets for virtually anyone, but they are a particularly good choice for those who are looking for a high-end “boutique” type dog that can live inside without causing allergy problems.
