Understanding Dogs Part 15 – Your Dog When He Is 7 to 12 Weeks Old
Your dog is a social animal. To become a satisfactory pet, the puppy wishes to engage with you and your folks, as well as with other humans and dogs in the 7th thru 12th week of life. If denied these opportunities, your dog’s behaviour around folks or dogs could be unpredictable – your dog might be afraid or maybe even assertive.
As an example, unless constantly exposed to youngsters in this period, a dog might be uncomfortable or treacherous around them. Socializing your dog is urgent for it to become a friendly adult dog.
When your baby dog is developing, reveal it to as many different people as feasible, including children and older folk. Let him meet new dogs, too. These early experiences will pay off enormously when your dog grows up. Your dog desires the opportunity to meet and have positive experiences with those people and activities that may perform a part in his life.
Here are just one or two examples :
* You are a grandparent whose grandkids often visit. Have your young dog meet kids as frequently as you can.
* You live by yourself but have chums that visit you. Try to let your dog meet people, especially members of the alternative sex.
* you intend to take your dog on family outings or vacations. Introduce riding in an auto.
We have been lucky in that we’ve managed to take our puppies to our coaching camps. The wealth of expertise they gained from the weeklong exposure to other dogs and folk has made it simple for us to take our dogs anywhere. As a consequence, they get with folk and dogs – and are envoys for all dogs.
A typical way for folk to welcome a puppy or an adult dog is to pat it on top of the head, just as they do with youngsters. The truth is that dogs do not like this sort of greeting any better than children do.
The puppy will instantly scrunch down and look unhappy, particularly if you lean over him also. Instead, greet your baby dog by putting the middle of your hand under his chin.
Stand up straight, or kneel down and greet him with a grin and a howdy. When meeting a puppy or dog for the 1st time, slowly put the middle of your hand toward him and let him smell you.
Socialization with other dogs is similarly crucial and is going to be the standard instead of the exception. It also has to happen on a consistent basis.
Ideally, the baby dog has a guru, an older dog who can teach it the ropes. We have been lucky enough in always having had a trainer dog who supervised the upbringing of a new puppy, making our task that much simpler.
