Bichon Frise Breeders – Most Are After Your Money, Here’s How To Avoid Them

There’s no mystery behind the increase of Bichon Frise Breeders. The impetus of course is the demand for Bichon Frise. Although this breed has been around for a long time – since the Middle Ages – the web has a way of spreading news unmatched by any medium before. Online media resources, like YouTube and social networking sites, like Facebook, allow people to upload and share images and video of Bichon as seen in every day life or in dog shows. For some, that more than enough to warm them to the breed. If you want to get a Bichon that’s pure bred and healthy, your best bet is finding reputable Bichon Frise Breeders. Here’s how to tell if you’ve found one.

The breeder must know the history of the Bichon, inside and out

Both the Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club officially recognize the Bichon Frise as a breed. That means there are standard breeding traits to be expected, following Kennel club recommendations, that any Bichon will have. That means you can ask the breeder about such standards, ask him to detail them if he can; then ask him if he abides by such breeding standards to ensure the health of the dog and the possession of traits unique to it. For all you know that person could only be a hired hand paid a wage to breed runt against runt by whoever runs puppy mill operation.

If a breeder does tell you a lot about the breed, it’s possible it’s part of his orientation, if he works for a puppy mill, to read and memorize Wikipedia. If he does spout such things, you may be better off directing him to cover the breed’s specific traits – in case the runt he brings out have a strange appearance that’s far from the traits he discussed.

The breeder should be able to talk about the breed’s health problems, not just its trait

That beautiful puff coat, must be ninety percent white by Kennel Club standards, and is the breed’s signature trait. Why do people love this breed? Partly Evans it doesn’t shed, or that it practically doesn’t, making it a favorite among dog lovers with allergies; but that’s just one thing, so ask the breeder how much he knows about the health problems the breed is open to.

The problem with that is the breeder’s speech on the dog’s health problems could also be rehearsed and derived from online info. A good litmus test, after you subject him to your questions, if he’s willing to show you the pertinent documents.

The breeder should volunteer the necessary documentation, from medical records to registration

You probably should bring a smartphone or tablet that can connect to the web, that way you can instantly check if the papers are legit. Probably unknown to some breeders, or perhaps they underestimate the lengths some people go through to sift through details, there are online databases against which one could check, for example, the legitimacy of dog registration records. If the breeder refuses to let you get details on the papers he’s holding, after you let him know you want to verify them, then you know you’re talking to a puppy mill operative.

Chihuahua Rescues in PA?

im considering moving to PA. With all those puppy mills, youd think id be able to find a chihuahua rescue, but no luck. so can anyone recommend a good chihuahua recue program? my local pound does not have any chihuahuas…
I dont want to buy from a breeder. i have the money and i could buy and chihuahua i want but i want to save a life. i will NEVER buy from a “breeder” from PA because i do not trust PA breeders…i dont care what they say.
oops, meant to say, ” i could buy *any chihuahua i want.” and thanks, i just discovered petfinder…but if you know of any specifically, im open to that too :)

Here are all the homeless Chihuahuas in PA shelters! :0) I couldn’t find any Chihuahua only rescues though.
I’m sure you’ll find (save) the perfect Chi for you.
