Crate Training a German Shepherd/Lab Mix?
I just got a 9 week old German Shepherd Lab mix….We decided to crate train but all the dogs does is bark from the moment it’s put in the crate till we let it out in the morning. This is my second puppy ever and my first one didn’t do this…..does anyone know how long this is going to last till the puppy will just be quiet in there? She doesn’t do it because she has to go potty, she barks as soon as she goes in for several hours.
Also, How long till a puppy can hold their pee all night? Should I be getting up every few hours to take her potty? How long till the “I don’t pee where I sleep” mentality kicks in?
The crate needs to be just big enough for her to turn around and lie down. If it’s too big, she can pee/poop in it and that’s not a good thing.
I always took my pups out once in the middle of the night about 2am. The breeder of my sibling pups told me they came through the night before I got them at 6 weeks of age. (I have adult dogs to train them, so they were ok to get so young).
During the day the crate should be mostly a safe haven and not a place you close them into.
Pups are lonesome for parents and siblings. I always take an old sock and stuff it with other old socks I’d otherwise throw away. This is then tied off or sewn shut and makes a littermate to keep the pup company.
Another good thing to do is wear a T-shirt so it has your scent and put it into the pup’s crate to give it something with your scent to snuggle at night and be comforted by.
If the dog isn’t force crated during the day, but only at night, and if it as something to comfort it when force crated at night, then it should calm down. Another thing you can do is put it into a utility room or bathroom with the crate so it can enter and exit the crate but in a room where there’s little risk of problems or getting into trouble. I didn’t crate mine, but restrained them in a safe room with an easy to clean floor and puppy pads. I hope you are working a house training program regularly all day long, and if so, the dog should go through the night fine very soon. -!-
