Dog Training Methods
What are the training methods used in teaching a dog with hunting instincts to do what they were bred for?
I do not ‘hunt’. My dogs are pets. But I a curious about what goes into teaching/training a dog to hunt? Do you also train said dog to hunt and kill? Or just hunt, find and then you do the kill?
ADD: No, my HUSBAND hunts.
If you need to “train” it,it’s the wrong dog & it’ll never be any good.
Exposure,experience,practice….yes,a dog will improve.
Bird-dawgs need to learn how far out to quarter-depends on personal preference & quarry & breed.Need to learn to HOLD their indication.Need a recall,to mark,retrieve w/out mangling the shot bird. Waterfowl dogs need to WAIT ,mark & retrieve.
Sighthounds need to learn which quarry,have a decent recall &,depending on quarry,retrieve live to-hand or stop & hold at bay until the guns reach them.
Scenthounds need to learn which quarry,be broken OFF others,bay on track to alert the guns & provide direction OR “tree” or bay HARD, & STAY on bay or TREE for as long as it takes.
Working terriers need to locate,enter & get right up to quarry -IN GROUND-& “work” it….either bay,(HOLD at bay until dug to),bolt(drive out) or draw….take a hold & pull out. Dogs small enough to enter are rarely able to kill & shouldn’t try. A dog that’s too hard will get damaged & need to be laid-up too often to be useful.
