Dog Training Jumping On People

How do I keep my dog from jumping on people when they walk through the door?

I have a 3 yr old pitbull mix that I adopted when she was 1 1/2. She is a fairly large dog, about 60 lbs. She is a very playful dog, but she is trained to sit, stay, etc. The problem is that when people come over, she is very overexcited when they come to the door. She will repeatedly jump up on them and bark at them (not agressively). After about five minutes, she calms down and it is fine. Recently, my 8 year old cousin came over and she is small, the dog almost knocked her down. Same happened with my elderly great aunt. I usually will just put her out when someone comes over. But sometimes people just stop by.

Is there a method in which to train a dog for this certain situation? Like I said, she does know how to sit and stay but she doesn’t heed these commands when she is so overexcited.

If she won’t obey commands she “knows” when there’s distractions, then she isn’t trained.

While you work on training her – that means raising criteria so she listens even when she doesn’t want to – put a leash on her so you can force her to listen.
