I want to train police k9s…?
Hello,
So I am a certified dog trainer. I studied k9 psychology. My real passion is to work with police k9s. OR some type of work in the area. I have been to a police k9 training class which I learned a lot!! (i know I have A LOT to learn still)
Well I have talked with a lot of people about it and still feel lost.. I was told you have to become a police officer fore years get a dog then someday train them, and I have heard there are ways to just be a trainer and then I have been told you can do it as a sport..
I want to train them AND/OR work with them in some way..
I live in the east bay CA
Anyone have an idea on how I can get a job or were to look it get into this field?
You can start a business training police dogs as a private vendor, but, your finished product has to be something that agencies would want to buy…many years of work and training involved in that.
You can join a police Dept and apply for the K-9 Unit and then go through training under an idiot who has no idea what training a police dog involves.
You can join a dog sport club and learn THE best way to train dogs as you will understand drives, motivations, drive satisfaction, etc.
A sports dog trainer that has branched into the police dog field is the best qualified to train you in that area.
Please understand that there are VERY few civilians that are able to train dogs for the police, not because they don’t know how, but, because the police think they do.
