Cesar Millan Puppy Books
Dalmatian puppy issues?
I have an 8 week old puppy. My wife and four year old love her. We can deal with the peeing and pooping indoors. What I cannot tolerate is her infatuation with biting us. She has a nylon bone, a rope, and plenty of soda bottle to chew on and run around with. She is getting old enough where she is drawing blood from biting me. I have read a book and will probably get Dog Whisperer but if anyone knows if this pup biting us like this is normal let me know. When she nips at my face I have slapped her and I’ve put myself in the dominant position over her on the ground holding her down like Cesar Millan says but, she is still stubborn about it. Please help.
I don’t really care for any Cesar Millan methods and certainly not slapping either. She’s still a puppy, of course she’s going to bite and chew on you, its to be expected.
What is unacceptable is her continually doing it. I’ve always heard of the ” yelp and shun” method. Whenever your puppy bits/nips you, you shout or yelp very loudly, when she lets go, you either leave the room or turn your back on her and don’t play with her. And when she goes to bite you again, you “yelp or make a startling noise”. This is exactly what play mates/mothers do in litters. They let each other know when one goes to far. And she not only sees you as her dominant but her playmate.
This of course hasn’t helped me in a few dogs in the past so I had to go on to other methods. Trading my arm or whatever for a chew toy. In most cases that worked. In one case, a particular rat terrier, it didn’t so I used this last method on him.
Whenever my puppy went to bite me, I would wrap the hand around her muzzle and keep it down for a few seconds. This is obviously not a pleasant position for the dog and she quickly learned that it was unacceptable to bite people, even in play.
