alpha dog quotes
Do you believe in Training dogs with a pack mentality, being the alpha etc?

Basically, With the view, to acting like wolves do in the wild?

And do u ever feel, if that because so many TV trainers your these terms, people just think you just quoting stuff you watched on TV if you even mention the words alpha, or pack?

My first 2 dogs were trained with very traditional methods and with good results, but after reading a few books im coming round to the ideas in them.
Im not going copy anyone from TV, but will admit, because of the terms ive heard them use, i was less likey to be open to ideas in books im reading at the moment.
I do agree most TV trainers arent all that good, only mentioned them, as a bad example that gives anyone who uses the same words a bad name.
I always used traditional methods, like i said with good results, but am open to new ideas too, as i can always learn more.
Just so everyone knows, not TDs from me, i respect eveyones point of view so far and what works for them and their dogs.

Alpha and pack mentality are human words dogs do not understand them therefore. They do however very clearly understand action, deed, praise, and penalty.
Dogs need to know who is in charge it is as simple and as complicated as that.
To get full and complete control of a dog what you have to have is win that particular dogs respect … (respect cannot be taken from any being it can only be given by it, or earned from it), The way to gain respect is to treat the dog calmly firmly and kindly and with the respect it earns from you, That cannot be gained from brutality as some seem to think. Only fear can be gained from tyranny or brutality.
For example a shock collar when it is not on the dog it will do as it wants, the moment it is on it will do as it is told … why is the dog has fear of the collar that does not therefore win you respect from the dog…. while quiet firm coercion will work!
In short to train a dog you need to understand its language and it yours the way to do that is to bond and listen to your dog and accept its needs, not force your wants upon it. Hope that helps you and answers your question As for the dogs evolving from wolves theory that is also “debateable”! Take the Dingo for instance he couldnt have evolved from wolf but he IS canine.
