Inspiring The Classic Pointer Pose

The dogs of the Pointer breed are medium sized dogs, as they measure between 22 and 24 inches in height. As in all breeds of dogs, the females weigh less than males, they have only between 44 and 60 pounds while the males weigh between 55 and 66 pounds. These graceful dogs have athletic and muscular bodies and are also quite social animals, as they are excellently interacting with dogs of other breeds and with people, either from their family or with strangers. If you want a very friendly dog as you have a large family or have other pets too, a good idea is to get the Pointer puppy used to other dogs and people, because as soon as you start socializing them, as friendly will be these dogs when they will be fully grown up. Most people are familiar with this breed having seen photographs or pictures depicting them in the classic Pointer profile pose, with the head and the tail held straight. Along time, breeders raised and selected these dogs for hunting purposes, so their bodies have muscular necks and strong legs, have deep chests that help them to breatheĀ  easy while they are running, and they look graceful and elegant in almost all situations.

The pointer breed has different varieties and they have been differently named until 1970s, when the American Kennel Club reunited them all under the same heading. As you can probably guess the breed derives its name from the classic Pointer pose that is employed whenever the dog has seen the object of its attention. It is as though the dog is pointing at the target with its nose.

The Pointer breed originates in England and its history goes all the way back to the mid-1600s when the first mention of the dogs of this breed was recorded in England, country where were they originally been raised to accompany hunters as they went out on hunting expeditions. They became popular hunting dogs due to their excellent and uncanny ability to be able to detect the scent of the prey animal and then indicate the direction the animal was heading. The bodies of these dogs are strong and well equilibrated, and their legs are muscular, so all these physical features allows them to run after their prey with great speed, being able to cover quite long distances in a short period of time. Unlike their cousins the retrievers they do not retrieve the prey and return to the group.

Pointers have very pleasing dispositions and are friendly and well-tempered. This breed enjoys human companionship and will be happiest if it is permitted to remain indoors with the rest of the family, and not to be constrained in the back yard. Different to almost all other breeds of hunting dogs, the pointerbreed does not require too much exercise. These dogs are not stubbornly hunting for other animals that are smaller than themselves, and they will feel fine with only a medium amount of exercise.

The dogs of the Pointer breed adapt easily to new surroundings, they are energetic and wholehearted animals. Their owners need also to know that these dogs can be rather headstrong at times and so a certain degree of firmness is required from their part during training and also in order to make them behave.
